I guess all of our Nissans we had were reasonably safe vehicles, at least our '95, '02, and '04 were all rated acceptable, quite well for the then-new crash test. As for the Mitsubishi, I hope my mom can buy another car soon even if it ends up a bit older, that thing is not only having a lot wrong with it, it is a death trap too! Hopefully her next car will be a Honda, Toyota, Nissan, or a Saturn.

These two videos are very helpful in deciding on used cars today. All the cars in these videos can be bought today in 2009 for $5000 or less and in many cases under $3000. Acceptable for a 12-year-old car is really not bad considering the alternatives. Driving a larger car would cost more in fuel. Driving a premium car (BMW 3, Audi A4, etc) would cost more in repairs. Driving a newer year model would cost more in purchase price and depreciation.

True, which is why the IIHS shifted their focus to side tests, head restraint design and now compatability tests with different size/weight vehicles. Funny, because when the cars did bad in the same tests, the manufacturers did the same "it's not fair complaining," but then stared designing cars that do better and better and now the side tests are generally producing "good" ratings. It's also funny since the manufacturers now boast of their IIHS ratings.
