But I own one because for one I can afford the gas and insurance on it, And for 2 I much prefer the elevated ride height, and rugged appearance of it. As far as mileage goes - in the 80's/90's, it seems like manufacturers were more willing to put a super tall 5th gear on these cars. This would help immensely on newer cars.

Keep your civic under 3,000 rpm or 70 MPH. Above 3,000 rpm your car increases engine power by switching to another set of cam shafts, or so I've heard. Don't pass cars if it's not essential. Keep a constant speed. In the city, I shift between 2-2.5rpm. Keep your tire pressure at recommended levels. Keeping your car clean=less weight=better MPG.

Whoa what was that at the end? Redesign for the Cavalier in 2003? There was a facelift but no structural changes, the IIHS didn't retest it. What was it supposed to be, what we now know as the Cobalt? The Delta platform came out the following year as the Saturn ION but it was a couple more years before they tested it.
